Understanding the Dangers of Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications for its unique properties. It is commonly found in insulation, fireproofing, and soundproofing materials, as well as in brake pads, clutches, and gaskets. While asbestos is not currently banned in the United States, its use is heavily regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Asbestos exposure can occur during the mining, milling, and manufacturing of asbestos-containing products, as well as during the installation, repair, or removal of these products. Asbestos exposure can also occur in homes and buildings that contain asbestos-containing materials.

Asbestos exposure is a known cause of mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart, or abdomen. Asbestos exposure is also linked to other cancers, including lung cancer and ovarian cancer.

There is no safe level of asbestos exposure. If you think you may have been exposed to asbestos, talk to your doctor about your risk factors and whether you should be tested for asbestos-related diseases.
