Understanding Mold Allergies and Health Risks

Mold Allergies and Health Risks
Mold is a type of fungus that is present in the natural environment. It can be found in soil, on plants, and in water. Mold spores are tiny and can be carried in the air. When mold spores land on a moist surface, they begin to grow.

Mold allergies are caused by an immune system reaction to mold spores. When a person with a mold allergy breathes in mold spores, the body produces histamine and other chemicals that cause allergy symptoms.

Symptoms of mold allergies include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and congestion. Mold allergies can also cause asthma attacks. People with mold allergies may also be allergic to other substances, such as dust mites, animal dander, and pollen.

Mold can also cause health problems in people who do not have allergies to mold. Mold can cause infections in the lungs and other parts of the body. It can also cause inflammation and irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat.

If you think you have a mold allergy, see an allergist for skin or blood testing. You can also try to avoid exposure to mold by staying indoors on days when mold counts are high, using an air conditioner or air purifier, and keeping the indoor humidity low.

If you have mold in your home, you should clean it up and fix the source of the moisture problem to prevent the mold from coming back.
