Understanding Mold Allergies and Health Risks

Mold is a type of fungus that is present in the environment both indoors and outdoors. It is estimated that there are over 100,000 different types of mold. While mold is necessary for the breakdown of organic matter, some types of mold can cause health problems in people who are allergic to it.

Mold allergies are the most common type of allergy. Symptoms of a mold allergy include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and congestion. Mold allergies can also cause asthma attacks. People with mold allergies are also more likely to develop sinus infections.

Mold can also cause health problems in people who are not allergic to it. Some types of mold produce toxins called mycotoxins. These toxins can cause respiratory problems, skin irritation, and gastrointestinal problems. In some cases, mycotoxins can cause neurological problems and cancer.

There are a few things you can do to reduce your exposure to mold. Some of these include:

-Keep your home clean and free of clutter.

-Fix any leaks or moisture problems in your home.

-Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter.

-Avoid using carpet in areas where mold is likely to grow.

-Wash bedding and clothing in hot water.

If you think you may have a mold allergy, it is important to see an allergist. Allergists can perform skin prick tests or blood tests to confirm the allergy. Once the allergy is confirmed, the allergist can help you develop a treatment plan to reduce your symptoms.
