Mold Allergies and Health Risks
Mold is a type of fungus that is present in the environment. It can be found in soil, on plant leaves, and in decaying organic matter. Mold spores are tiny and invisible to the naked eye. When mold spores are released into the air, they can be inhaled and cause an allergic reaction.
Mold allergies are common, affecting up to one in three people. Mold allergy symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and congestion. In severe cases, mold allergy can cause difficulty breathing, wheezing, and asthma attacks.
People with mold allergies are also at increased risk for other health problems, such as sinus infections, ear infections, and bronchitis. Mold can also trigger symptoms in people with other allergies, such as hay fever and pet allergies.
There are many different types of mold, and not all of them cause allergies. However, the most common allergenic mold is called Alternaria. Alternaria is found in damp places, such as showers, basements, and air conditioners. It can also be found in soil and on plant leaves.
If you think you have a mold allergy, it is important to see an allergist for diagnosis and treatment. Allergy shots (immunotherapy) can be an effective treatment for mold allergies. Avoiding mold exposure is also important. This can be difficult, as mold is present in many places in the environment. However, there are some steps you can take to reduce your exposure, such as:
-Keeping your home clean and dry
-Fixing leaks and other sources of moisture
-Using an air purifier
-Staying out of damp places
-Wearing a dust mask when outdoors
-Washing your clothes after being outdoors
-Showering and changing clothes after being in a moldy environment
-Avoiding moldy foods
-Keeping your pets clean and dry
