Top Tips for Fireproofing Your Home

As the world becomes more industrialized, the risk of fire in the home increases. Here are some top tips for fireproofing your home:

1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every bedroom. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Make sure everyone in your family knows how to get out of every room and where to meet once they’re outside.

3. Keep flammable and combustible materials like lighters and matches out of reach of children. Store them in a high, locked cabinet.

4. Never leave candles unattended. Extinguish them before you leave the room or go to bed.

5. Don’t overload electrical outlets and extension cords. If you must use them, make sure they’re not frayed or damaged in any way.

6. Keep lint and dust clean from your dryer vent. Lint is highly combustible and can easily catch fire.

7. Don’t leave space heaters unattended. Turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed.

8. Keep your fireplace clean and in good repair. Have the chimney inspected and cleaned annually.

9. Don’t smoke inside your home. If you do, use deep, sturdy ashtrays. Dispose of cigarette butts and ashes properly.

10. Keep flammable liquids like gasoline, kerosene, and cleaning products in their original containers and stored in a cool, dry place.

By following these simple tips, you can help keep your home and family safe from fire.
