Top Tips for Fireproofing Your Home

As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When it comes to fireproofing your home, this adage couldn’t be more true. Taking some simple, proactive steps to fireproof your home can save your life and the lives of your loved ones in the event of a fire.

Here are some top tips for fireproofing your home:

1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every bedroom. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Make sure everyone in your household knows two ways to exit every room and has a designated meeting place outside.

3. Keep flammable and combustible materials like lighters, matches, and gasoline out of the reach of children.

4. Store wood, kindling, and firewood at least three feet away from your home.

5. Don’t overload electrical outlets and extension cords.

6. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials like curtains, furniture, and bedding.

7. Never leave candles unattended.

8. Don’t leave the kitchen while cooking.

9. Avoid using the oven to heat your home.

10. Don’t smoke inside your home.

By following these simple tips, you can help protect your home and loved ones from the devastating effects of fire.
