The Long-Term Effects of Unaddressed Water Damage

Water damage is one of the most common and costly problems faced by homeowners. According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage and freezing account for more than one in four homeowners insurance claims.

While the immediate effects of water damage are often obvious, the long-term effects can be more insidious. Unaddressed water damage can lead to a host of problems, including:

• Mold and mildew: When water seeps into materials like drywall, carpeting or insulation, it provides the perfect environment for mold and mildew to grow. Not only is mold unsightly, it can also be dangerous to your health, causing respiratory problems, headaches and other health issues.

• Structural damage: Water that isn’t promptly removed from structural materials like wood can cause warping, rot and other damage. This can weaken the structure of your home and make it more susceptible to collapse in the event of a fire or other disaster.

• Pest problems: Standing water can attract pests like mosquitoes, termites and rodents. These pests can not only cause damage to your home, but can also spread disease.

If you experience water damage in your home, it’s important to address the problem immediately to minimize the long-term effects. Be sure to remove all standing water, dry out wet materials and have a professional inspect your home for mold or other damage.
