The Importance of Disaster Preparedness for Tennessee’s Seniors

As our population ages, it’s important to be aware of the dangers posed by natural disasters and take steps to ensure our safety.

In Tennessee, we’re fortunate to have a relatively low risk of earthquakes, but we’re vulnerable to tornadoes, severe storms, and flooding. And while any of us can be caught off guard by severe weather, seniors are especially at risk.

That’s why it’s so important for seniors to have a plan in place in case of an emergency. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Know your risks. Be sure to stay up-to-date on the types of disasters that could occur in your area, and how to stay safe if they do.

• Have an emergency kit. This should include enough food, water, and supplies to last at least 72 hours.

• Know your evacuation route. If you need to evacuate, know where you’ll go and how you’ll get there.

• Have a communication plan. Make sure you have a way to stay in touch with your loved ones in case of an emergency.

• Stay active and independent. The better your physical and mental health, the better you’ll be able to weather a disaster.

By taking these steps, you can help ensure your safety in the event of a natural disaster. For more information on disaster preparedness, visit the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency’s website.
