The Importance of Disaster Preparedness for Tennessee’s Seniors

As our state’s population ages, it’s more important than ever to be prepared for disasters. Seniors are more vulnerable to the effects of extreme weather, power outages, and other emergencies. That’s why the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) encourages all Tennesseans to have a plan and be prepared.

Here are some tips for seniors to stay safe during a disaster:

• Stay aware of weather conditions and be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

• Have an emergency kit ready, including supplies for your medications.

• Keep a list of important phone numbers handy, including TEMA’s statewide emergency number (1-800-262-3257) and your doctor’s office.

• Know your evacuation route and have a backup plan in case you can’t return home right away.

• Stay with friends or family if possible, or make arrangements to stay at a safe location if you need to evacuate.

• If you have a disability or special need, register with TEMA’s Special Needs Registry so first responders can better assist you during an emergency.

For more information on disaster preparedness, visit TEMA’s website at www.tn.gov/tema.
