The Impact of Climate Change on Flooding and Storm Damage

Climate change is already making floods and storms more damaging. The extra heat in the atmosphere is making downpours more intense, and the resulting floods larger and more destructive. The same goes for storms: the increased heat is giving hurricanes, typhoons, and other tropical cyclones more energy, making them more intense and destructive when they hit land.

A warmer atmosphere can also hold more water vapor. That means that when a storm does form, it has more water to work with, and can drop more rain.

Climate change is also causing sea levels to rise. That means that when a storm surge hits, the resulting floods are higher and more damaging.

All of this is happening now, and it’s only going to get worse as climate change continues. The best way to protect ourselves from the increasing damage from floods and storms is to cut emissions and slow the warming of the planet.
