Tennessee’s Disaster Response Timeline: What to Expect after a Major Event

FacebookFacebookTwitterTwitterEmailEmailShareShare

When a major disaster strikes, it can be difficult to know what to expect. Tennessee’s Disaster Response Timeline can help you plan for the days and weeks ahead.

After a major event, the first 72 hours are critical. This is when emergency services are working to assess the situation and provide help to those who need it most. If you are able, you should stay at home and avoid travel during this time.

In the days and weeks following a disaster, there will be a lot of cleanup and recovery work to be done. This is when you can expect to see power and water service restored, roads and bridges repaired, and debris removed.

If you have been affected by a disaster, it is important to register with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as soon as possible. You can do this online at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).

FEMA will provide you with information about what assistance is available and how to apply for it. You may also be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance if your job has been affected by the disaster.

The Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS) can also provide assistance with food, shelter, and other needs. You can contact DHS by calling 1-888-867-3276 or visiting www.tn.gov/humanservices.

When a disaster strikes, it can be a difficult and confusing time. But by knowing what to expect and where to go for help, you can get through it.
