Steps to Take After Discovering Water Damage in Your Home

Water damage is one of the most common and costly problems faced by homeowners. According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage and freezing account for more than one billion dollars in insurance claims each year.

While some water damage is caused by major weather events like hurricanes and floods, most is due to smaller, everyday occurrences like leaks and broken pipes. No matter the source, water damage can be a serious problem, causing extensive damage to your home and posing a serious health risk to you and your family.

If you discover water damage in your home, it is important to take immediate action to mitigate the damage and protect your health. Here are four steps to take if you discover water damage in your home:

1. Stop the source of the water. If the water damage is due to a broken pipe or leaky appliance, it is important to stop the flow of water as soon as possible. Turn off the water at the main shut-off valve or, if that is not possible, at the appliance or fixture itself.

2. Remove any standing water. Once the water has been shut off, remove any standing water from the affected area. Use a wet/dry vacuum or mop to remove as much water as possible.

3. Remove wet items and dry the area. Wet items, including carpeting, furniture, and clothing, should be removed from the area and dried as soon as possible. Place wet items in a well-ventilated area and use fans or air movers to help speed the drying process.

4. Call a professional. Water damage can be a serious problem, so it is important to call a professional water damage restoration company as soon as possible. These companies have the training and equipment necessary to properly clean and repair water damaged areas.

If you discover water damage in your home, taking quick action is important. By following these four steps, you can help mitigate the damage and protect your health.
