How to Prepare for Tornadoes in Tennessee and Northern Alabama

Tornadoes are a very real threat in Tennessee and Northern Alabama. In fact, this region is considered to be part of “Tornado Alley,” where tornadoes are more likely to occur. Here are some tips on how to prepare for a tornado:

1. Know the signs of a tornado. Look for dark, rotating clouds; a loud, roaring sound; and/or flying debris. If you see any of these signs, take shelter immediately.

2. Have a plan. Know where you will take shelter if a tornado is headed your way. The best option is a basement or storm cellar. If you don’t have access to one of these, try to find an interior room on the lowest level of your home, away from windows.

3. Make sure your family is prepared. Everyone should know the tornado plan and where to take shelter. It’s also a good idea to have a emergency kit ready, in case you’re stranded after the tornado.

4. Stay tuned to the latest weather forecast. If a tornado is likely, make sure you have a way to get warnings, whether that’s a weather radio or app on your phone.

5. Be prepared to act quickly. Tornadoes can form quickly and without much warning. If you see a tornado, take shelter immediately.
