Flood Recovery: Safeguarding Your Home and Belongings

Flooding can happen suddenly and without much warning. If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, it’s important to be prepared. Here are some tips to help you safeguard your home and belongings in the event of a flood.

• Move valuable items to higher levels. If you live in a two-story home, move valuables and essential items to the second floor. If you have a basement, move items to the highest level possible.

• Create a barrier. If you have time before the floodwaters arrive, you can create a barrier to help protect your home. Place sandbags or flood barriers around the perimeter of your home.

• Turn off utilities. If the floodwaters are rising, it’s important to turn off your utilities. This includes gas, electricity, and water.

• Disconnect appliances. If possible, disconnect and move appliances to higher ground.

• Protect your belongings. If you have time, try to protect your belongings by moving them to higher ground or wrapping them in plastic.

• evacuate. If the floodwaters are rising and you’re in danger, evacuate immediately.
