Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners

As a homeowner, you have a responsibility to keep your family safe from fire. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in each bedroom. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2. Create and practice a home fire escape plan. Make sure everyone in your family knows how to get out of the house quickly and safely in the event of a fire.

3. Keep flammable items like lighters and matches out of reach of children.

4. Store flammable liquids like gasoline and cleaning products in safe, approved containers.

5. Never leave burning candles unattended.

6. Don’t overload electrical outlets and extension cords.

7. Keep fireplaces and wood-burning stoves clean and in good working order.

8. Dispose of ashes properly.

9. Don’t smoke inside the house.

10. If you must smoke outside, use deep, sturdy ashtrays.

By following these simple tips, you can help keep your family safe from fire.
