Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners

As a homeowner, you are responsible for the safety of your family and your home. One of the most important things you can do to protect your home is to make sure it is safe from fire. Here are some tips to help you keep your home safe from fire:

1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside of all sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.

2. Create and practice a home fire escape plan. Make sure everyone in your family knows how to get out of your home in case of a fire.

3. Keep flammable items, such as lighters and matches, out of reach of children.

4. Store flammable liquids, such as gasoline and paint thinner, in safe containers outside of your home.

5. Do not overload electrical outlets and never use extension cords with heat-producing appliances, such as space heaters.

6. Do not leave burning candles unattended.

7. Keep your fireplace and chimney clean and in good repair.

8. Do not burn trash in your fireplace.

9. Do not leave your oven or stovetop unattended while cooking.

10. If you must leave your home while cooking, turn off the oven or stovetop.

By following these tips, you can help keep your home safe from fire.
