Dealing with Storm Surge and Coastal Flooding

As Hurricane Florence approaches the Carolina coast, residents are preparing for the possibility of storm surge and coastal flooding. Storm surge is the abnormal rise in seawater level during a hurricane, resulting from the low pressure in the center of the storm. This can cause severe flooding in coastal areas.

To prepare for the possibility of storm surge and coastal flooding, residents should have a plan in place to evacuate if necessary. They should also have a emergency kit ready, including food, water, and first-aid supplies.

During the storm, residents should stay indoors and away from windows. If flooding does occur, they should avoid standing water, which may be contaminated.

After the storm, residents should avoid floodwaters, which may be contaminated with sewage or other hazardous materials. If their home has been flooded, they should take steps to clean and disinfect it to prevent mold growth.
