Addressing Water Damage in Commercial Buildings

Water damage is one of the most common and costly problems faced by commercial building owners and managers. According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage claims have increased by over 50% since 2013, and they now account for one in every four property insurance claims.

There are many possible causes of water damage in commercial buildings, including burst pipes, leaks, overflows, and heavy rains or floods. And while some water damage is unavoidable, there are steps you can take to minimize the risk and the extent of the damage if it does occur.

Here are some tips for addressing water damage in commercial buildings:

1. Act quickly

The sooner you address water damage, the better. Time is of the essence when it comes to water damage because the longer water sits, the more damage it can do. So, if you have a water leak, don’t wait to call a professional – get it fixed as soon as possible.

2. Call a professional

Trying to clean up water damage yourself is generally not a good idea. Water damage is a complex problem that requires the expertise of a trained professional. A professional will have the knowledge and the tools to properly assess the damage and take the necessary steps to repair it.

3. Document the damage

If you do have to file an insurance claim, you’ll need to document the damage. Be sure to take pictures or videos of the damage, and keep any receipts for repairs or replacements. This documentation will be crucial in getting your claim approved.

4. Don’t forget about hidden damage

Water damage can often be hidden, so it’s important to look for signs of it even if you don’t see any water. Be on the lookout for things like peeling paint, warping wood, and musty odors. These can all be signs of hidden water damage.

5. Address the source of the problem

Once the immediate problem has been addressed, it’s important to find and fix the source of the water damage. If you don’t, you’re likely to have the same problem again in the future.

Water damage is a serious problem that can be costly to repair. But by taking some proactive steps, you can minimize the risk of water damage in your commercial building.
