A Guide to Tennessee’s Disaster Assistance Programs and Resources

Tennessee is no stranger to natural disasters. From tornadoes to floods, the Volunteer State has seen its share of devastation.

In the wake of a disaster, it can be difficult to know where to turn for help. That’s why the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) has compiled a list of disaster assistance programs and resources.

If you’ve been affected by a natural disaster in Tennessee, here are some programs that may be able to help you with recovery:

• Disaster Recovery Centers: TEMA operates Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) following a major disaster. DRCs provide a one-stop shop for disaster survivors to get information about available assistance.

• Individual Assistance: Individuals who have been affected by a disaster may be eligible for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and families recover from the effects of a disaster.

• Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loans: Businesses and private non-profit organizations of all sizes may be eligible for low-interest loans to help them recover from declared disasters.

• TEMA Public Assistance Program: The Public Assistance program provides reimbursement to local governments, state agencies, and certain private non-profit organizations for eligible disaster-related expenses.

• Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOADs): There are a number of VOADs in Tennessee that provide assistance following a disaster. These organizations are typically made up of faith-based groups, non-profit organizations, and businesses that have come together to provide assistance to disaster survivors.

If you need assistance following a disaster, TEMA has compiled a list of resources that may be able to help you. For more information, visit www.tn.gov/tema.
